Wegovy Dose Changes, Side Effects, and What to Expect if You Progress

If you or your clinician are considering the newly available higher Wegovy dose, it’s completely normal to have questions about side effects, timing, and safety.

Here’s what we want you to know.

Why dose increases can feel different:

GLP-1 medications work by:

  • Reducing appetite
  • Slowing digestion
  • Supporting blood sugar regulation

When doses increase, your body needs time to adapt. This is why side effects are most likely, during dose changes and in the first few weeks at a new dose.

Common effects can include nausea, constipation, or changes in appetite, these are usually mild and temporary, and often settle as your body adapts.

Why SheMed may slow things down

Clinical trials often follow a fixed schedule, although we know that bodies respond differently to treatment. At SheMed, we intentionally take a gradual, supportive approach, particularly when moving to higher doses to ensure that side effects are minimal and effectively managed, helping to  improve long-term adherence. Rather than increasing straight to the highest dose from 2.4mg we may introduce an interim dose to help your body to adjust more comfortably.

Using an interim step in dosing, allows your digestive system time to adapt, helps reduce the likelihood and severity of side effects as well as improve long-term tolerability and treatment adherence. Many members do best when spending several weeks at a dose before progressing further and sometimes our clinician will suggest that someone remains at that dose long-term because it continues to work well for them.

Will I increase to 7.2mg?

No, if you're losing weight steadily, feeling well and comfortably managing side effects then there will be no clinical need to increase your dose further. The goal is not to reach the highest dose, but to find the lowest effective dose that supports your health in a sustainable way.

What if I feel I want to increase my dose?

If weight loss has slowed or appetite control feels less effective, a higher dose may help but only after:

  • You’ve had time to stabilise at your current dose
  • Side effects are manageable
  • A clinician has reviewed your progress

Any dose change is always made with you, based on how your body responds.

Will my price change if I move to a higher dose?

Yes. Doses above 2.4mg are supplied at a higher cost, so if you and your clinician decide that increasing your dose is right for you, this will involve a price increase.

We’ll always be clear about pricing before any dose change is made.  Importantly, there is no requirement to increase your dose if your current dose is working well for you.
