How to Prepare for Your First GLP-1 Injection

Starting a new medication like GLP-1s (Wegovy or Mounjaro) can feel like a big step – and it is. If you're feeling nervous about your first injection, you're not alone. At SheMed, thousands of women have walked this path, and we’re here to help you feel confident and prepared.

What GLP-1 Medications Do

GLP-1s mimic a natural hormone in your gut that helps regulate:

  • Appetite – You feel full sooner and eat less.

  • Blood sugar – Insulin works more effectively.

  • Digestion – Slower gastric emptying reduces hunger spikes.

These changes support safe, effective weight loss and long-term metabolic health.

Your First Injection: What to Know

Below is the dosing you will start on:

  • Wegovy: 0.25mg weekly

  • Mounjaro: 2.5mg weekly

It is important to note that your dose will increase gradually over time, and the decision of what your body needs will be made by a SheMed clinician.

Steps to Follow:

  1. Choose your injection site

    • Belly (2 inches away from your belly button), outer thigh, or upper arm

    • Rotate locations each week

  2. Clean the area

    • Optional to use an alcohol swab

  3. Inject

    • Pen: 90° angle and press the button

    • Inject slowly – this reduces any discomfort

  4. Dispose safely

    • Use the SheMed provided sharps bin for used pens and needles

How to Feel Calmer

First time? Feeling nervous is totally normal. Try:

  • Deep breathing or calming music

  • Guided meditation before injecting

  • Watch SheMed’s how-to video beforehand

  • Practice the motion on a pillow if needed

Common Side Effects (and What to Do)

Most side effects are mild and improve with time:

  • Nausea (most common)

  • Constipation or diarrhoea

  • Reduced appetite (expected – and helpful!)

Stay hydrated, eat smaller meals, and move gently after eating. Also refer to SheMed’s side effect care package sent in your first delivery if medication to treat is needed.

You’ve Got This!

Preparing well makes all the difference. You're not just taking medication; you’re investing in your health and future. And we’re here to support you every step of the way.
