How to take Wegovy 4.8mg or Wegovy 7.2mg

Why some Wegovy doses are given as more than one injection

As part of ongoing improvements to Wegovy treatment, higher doses are now available.. You may notice that these doses are taken as more than one injection on the same day and we want to explain why.

Wegovy is supplied in pre-filled pens, each designed to deliver a maximum of 2.4mg per injection. At present, the pen itself isn’t large enough to hold higher doses in a single injection.

For this reason, Novo Nordisk has worked with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to approve a regulated and safe approach where higher doses are taken as multiple 2.4mg injections, given one after the other during the same weekly dosing session.

This means:

  • 4.8mg is taken as two 2.4mg injections, and
  • 7.2mg is taken as three 2.4mg injections

These injections are taken on the same day, follow clear guidance on spacing and needle use, and deliver the correct total dose as explained below.

This is an interim measure as we understand that Novo Nordisk is in the process of registering an updated device that may allow higher doses to be delivered in a single injection in the future. Until then, this multi-injection method is the approved and expected way to take higher Wegovy doses.

How to take Wegovy 4.8mg

If you are prescribed Wegovy 4.8mg, this dose is taken as two separate 2.4mg injections, given one after the other on the same day, once weekly.

How to administer the injections

It’s important to know that to take 4.8mg, you will use two 2.4mg Wegovy pens, injected one after the other.

  • Both injections can be given in the same body area (such as the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm) and each injection should be placed at least 5 cm apart.
You must use a new needle for each injection
  • Both injections should be taken one after the other, during the same session

When to take the 4.8mg dose

Wegovy 4.8mg is taken once a week, on the same day each week. Aim to take it at a time that fits comfortably into your routine.

A reminder on 4.8mg

The 4.8mg dose is often used as an interim step to help your body adjust before moving to a higher dose. Some people remain at this dose longer if it continues to work well for them.

How to take Wegovy 7.2mg

If you are prescribed Wegovy 7.2mg, this dose is taken as three separate 2.4mg injections, given one after the other on the same day, once weekly.

How to administer the injections

  • It is important that you’re aware that in order to take 7.2mg, you will take three 2.4mg Wegovy injections in a row.
  • All injections can be given in the same body area (such as the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm) but each injection should be placed at least 5 cm apart
  • You must use a new needle for each injection
  • Importantly, all 3 injections should be taken one after another, during the same session
When to take 7.2mg dose

Wegovy 7.2mg is taken once a week, on the same day each week. Aim to take it at a time that fits comfortably into your routine

Not everyone needs to progress to 7.2mg. Your clinician will only recommend this dose if it is appropriate for you. If you have any questions about how to take your injections, or if anything feels unclear, your SheMed team is here to help.

Why some Wegovy doses are given as more than one injection

You may notice that higher Wegovy doses, such as 4.8mg and 7.2mg, are taken as more than one injection on the same day. This is completely expected and part of the MHRA-approved way these doses are currently supplied.

The pre-filled Wegovy pens are designed to hold a maximum of 2.4mg per injection. At present, the pen itself is not large enough to contain the full 4.8mg or 7.2mg dose in a single injection.

For this reason, Novo Nordisk has worked with the MHRA to approve a regulated approach where higher doses are given as:

  • Two 2.4mg injections for a 4.8mg dose, or
  • Three 2.4mg injections for a 7.2mg dose

These injections are taken one after the other, during the same weekly dosing session, and follow official guidance on injection spacing and needle use.

Novo Nordisk is in the process of registering an updated device that may allow higher doses to be delivered in a single injection in the future. Until then, this multi-injection method is the approved and safe way to take higher Wegovy doses.
