Wegovy 7.2: What's New and Why It Matters
If you’re currently taking Wegovy, you may have seen recent discussion about a higher 7.2mg dose becoming available. We wanted to explain what this means, why it exists, and how it fits into long-term treatment.
What is Wegovy 7.2mg?
Wegovy 7.2mg is a higher licensed dose of semaglutide.
Following the submission of clinical trial data by Novo Nordisk last year, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now approved this higher dose for use in the UK. This means the 7.2mg dose has been reviewed for safety, quality, and effectiveness, in line with UK regulatory standards.
Why was a higher dose developed?
The 7.2mg dose was developed to support people who:
- Have already reached 2.4mg, and
- May benefit from additional appetite regulation and metabolic support over time
This dose was studied in the STEP UP clinical trial, which followed participants for over 72 weeks, providing longer-term data than many earlier studies.
What did the research show?
In the STEP UP trial:
- People taking 7.2mg lost more weight on average than those continuing on 2.4mg
- Nearly half of participants lost 20% or more of their starting weight
- Weight loss was maintained over time, supporting its role in longer-term treatment
Side effects were:
- Similar to those seen with other GLP-1 doses
- Mostly mild to moderate
- Most commonly experienced during dose increases, rather than during stable dosing
Does everyone need to move to 7.2mg?
No. Many people continue to do very well at 2.4mg, and there is no requirement to increase dose if:
- Weight loss is steady
- Appetite feels well controlled
At SheMed, we see Wegovy as a long-term health treatment, not a race to the highest dose. The right dose is the one that supports your health safely and sustainably.
How does SheMed approach dose changes?
Rather than moving straight from 2.4mg to 7.2mg, SheMed follows a more gradual, individualised approach. This may include an intermediate step, allowing your body time to adjust as the dose increases.
In clinical trials, side effects were more common at higher doses, particularly during dose changes. Using an interim dose helps support a smoother transition, with the aim of reducing side effects and improving overall tolerability.
All dose adjustments are guided by your clinician and based on how your body responds, ensuring your treatment remains safe, comfortable, and effective.
