You spend roughly a third of your life asleep, which makes it one of the biggest single influences on how you feel, think and function day to day. Sleep isn't just downtime. It's active repair work that affects your heart, your metabolism, your immune system and your ability to think clearly.

There's no single "right" number of hours that works for everyone, but consistently getting too little sleep is linked to real, long-term health risks.

How Your Body Controls Sleep

Light is the main signal that keeps your sleep cycle on track. When light hits your eyes in the morning, it tells your brain that it's daytime, and that signal travels through your nervous system to help regulate everything from alertness to digestion.

As the day goes on, two things build up in your body: the hormone cortisol rises in the morning to promote wakefulness, while the neurotransmitter adenosine and the hormone melatonin gradually accumulate, eventually triggering the urge to sleep once they reach a certain level. Caffeine and certain medications can interfere with this process, which is part of why a late coffee can leave you wired well past bedtime.

The Two Stages of Sleep

Each night, your body moves between two main types of sleep, cycling through them six to eight times.

REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) is where most dreaming happens. Your eyes move quickly, your brain stays active, and your muscles relax almost completely.

Non-REM sleep has a lighter phase, followed by a deeper phase where most physical repair takes place. This deeper stage is largely why you wake up feeling refreshed, or don't, depending on how much of it you got.

Why Sleep Protects Your Long-Term Health

Poor sleep doesn't just leave you tired the next day. Over time, it's linked to several serious health conditions.

Heart and Circulatory Health

Your blood pressure naturally drops during non-REM sleep. If you're not getting enough of this phase, or you're waking frequently through the night, your body misses out on that recovery window. Over time, this is linked to a higher risk of heart attacks, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and stroke.

Metabolism

Your liver, fat tissue and muscles all run on internal clocks that influence how your body processes fat. Insufficient sleep disrupts hunger hormones and insulin response, which can lead to overeating, reduced activity, and metabolic syndrome, all of which make weight management harder.

Respiratory Health

Sleep supports healthy lung function, but disrupted or insufficient sleep can worsen respiratory issues like sleep apnoea and asthma, partly because you take in less oxygen while sleeping poorly.

Immune Function

Quality sleep helps your body produce the infection-fighting cytokines your immune system relies on. Chronic sleep deprivation weakens that response, which is part of why poor sleepers tend to get sick more often.

The Two-Way Link Between Sleep and Weight

Sleep and weight influence each other in both directions, which can make the relationship feel like a difficult cycle to break.

Carrying excess weight is itself linked to sleep problems, including insomnia, restless leg syndrome and sleep apnoea. At the same time, poor sleep disrupts the hormones that control appetite, often making you hungrier and increasing snacking. It also leaves you more fatigued, which makes finding the motivation to exercise harder still.

Put together, reduced sleep, increased food intake and reduced activity can compound each other and contribute to weight gain, which is why sleep deserves real attention as part of any weight loss plan.

Practical Ways to Support Better Sleep

Improving sleep isn't a one-size-fits-all task, but a few evidence-based habits tend to help most people:

  • Keep a consistent sleep and wake time, even on weekends
  • Get natural light exposure earlier in the day to support your body's internal clock
  • Limit caffeine in the afternoon and evening
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet
  • Avoid heavy meals or intense exercise too close to bedtime
