The Wegovy Pill Is Now Approved in the UK — Here's What Women Need to Know

The UK's medicines regulator has approved oral Wegovy, the first GLP-1 tablet licensed specifically for weight management in the UK. For women who have been interested in weight loss treatment but hesitant about injections, this could mark an important new chapter. But what exactly is oral Wegovy, how does it compare to the injection, and what could it mean for women considering treatment?
For many women exploring weight loss treatment, the biggest barrier wasn't the medication itself, it was the injection.
While GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy have transformed obesity treatment in recent years, not everyone feels comfortable with the idea of a weekly injection. Some women dislike needles, some worry about travelling with injectable medication, and others simply prefer the convenience of taking a tablet as part of their daily routine.
Today, that could begin to change.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved oral Wegovy for weight management in the UK, providing women with a new way to access one of the most effective weight management treatments available today.
For women living with obesity or weight-related health conditions, this approval represents an important expansion of treatment choice and reflects the continued evolution of obesity care.
What is oral Wegovy?
Oral Wegovy contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the weekly Wegovy injection.
Like the injectable version, it works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1, helping to regulate appetite, reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness. The difference is simply how the medication is taken.
Instead of a once-weekly injection, oral Wegovy is taken as a daily tablet.
Some readers may already be familiar with Rybelsus, another oral semaglutide medication. While Rybelsus is licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, oral Wegovy has been specifically approved for weight management, marking the first time an oral GLP-1 has been licensed for obesity treatment in the UK.
For some women, this may seem like a small change. But for others, it could make treatment feel more accessible, more convenient and easier to fit into everyday life.
Does the tablet work as well as the injection?
One of the biggest questions women are likely to ask is whether a tablet can deliver the same kind of results as an injection.
The data is certainly encouraging.
The MHRA approval was supported by results from Novo Nordisk's OASIS clinical trial programme, which evaluated oral semaglutide in adults living with obesity or overweight with weight-related health conditions.
In the OASIS 4 trial, participants taking oral semaglutide alongside lifestyle support achieved an average weight loss of almost 17% of their body weight over 64 weeks. More than one in three participants lost 20% or more of their body weight during the study.
These results are among the strongest ever reported for an oral weight management medication and demonstrate that a tablet can deliver clinically meaningful weight loss for many people.
The study also showed improvements in several cardiometabolic health measures, reinforcing what we already know about semaglutide's ability to support meaningful, long-term weight management.
As with injectable Wegovy, individual results vary, and the medication is designed to be used alongside healthy lifestyle changes rather than as a standalone solution.
Why might some women prefer a tablet?
Weight management is personal, and so are treatment preferences.
Many women are perfectly comfortable with injections and appreciate the convenience of only needing to take their medication once a week.
Others have found injections to be a barrier.
Some dislike needles. Some worry about travelling with injectable medication. Others simply prefer taking a tablet as part of their existing daily routine.
Having a tablet option doesn't mean injections are disappearing. Instead, it provides greater choice, allowing treatment to be tailored to individual preferences, lifestyles and healthcare needs.
And in healthcare, more choice often means more people are able to access support that works for them.
Can women access oral Wegovy now?
While today's approval is an exciting development, individuals will not be able to access oral Wegovy immediately.
The MHRA approval confirms that oral Wegovy has met the required standards for safety, quality and effectiveness and can now be prescribed for eligible patients. The next step is ensuring sufficient stock is available within the UK supply chain and distributed through pharmaceutical wholesalers to pharmacies, allowing prescriptions to be dispensed to patients.
Novo Nordisk already works with established distribution partners to supply medicines across the UK, and availability will depend on stock being released through these channels and reaching pharmacies nationwide.
This means that while approval has been granted, there may be a short period before oral Wegovy becomes routinely available for dispensing across the UK.
Women interested in oral Wegovy should continue to follow updates from trusted providers as availability develops over the coming weeks.
What does this mean for the future of weight management?
Today's announcement is about more than a new tablet.
It reflects a broader shift in obesity care, one that recognises people benefit from having different treatment options available to them.
For many years, obesity treatment was often approached as a one-size-fits-all challenge. Increasingly, healthcare providers are recognising the importance of personalised care, long-term support and patient choice.
The approval of oral Wegovy is another step towards a future where women have greater flexibility in how they access evidence-based weight management treatments.
