Orforglipron (Foundayo) was approved by the MHRA on 10 August 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to license it for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
It is a prescription-only medicine, with private availability to begin soon. It is not available on the NHS yet, as it requires a separate NICE approval for it.

What Just Happened: The MHRA Approval Explained
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, or the MHRA, published its authorisation for Orforglipron on 10 August 2026.
With this, the UK became the first regulator in Europe to approve this GLP-1 tablet. This is a notably significant milestone for moving so quickly compared to the typical gap between US FDA approval and MHRA authorisation for GLP-1 medicines.
The approval covers both, weight management for eligible adults, and improving blood sugar control in adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes. Foundayo remains the brand name for both in the UK.
What the MHRA Said
The MHRA's statement confirmed: "Following rigorous assessment of orforglipron's safety, quality, and effectiveness, we are pleased to be the first regulator in Europe to authorise this tablet for weight management and type 2 diabetes. As with all GLP-1 receptor agonists, this is a prescription-only medication, and the MHRA will keep the safety and effectiveness of orforglipron under close review."
Funny story: We had literally written this entire article saying Orforglipron is not available in the UK and that approvals can be expected later in 2026. We were about to hit publish before we saw the MHRA announcement that Orforglipron just received MHRA approval. Everyone was surprised and excited. The extra shock came from the fact that this article was now to be re-written entirely.
Who Is Orforglipron (Foundayo) Licensed For in the UK?
Just like for other GLP-1 medicines, the MHRA has set out clear eligibility criteria for orforglipron too.
- For weight management: adults with a BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or a BMI of 27 to 30 with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or PCOS, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity
- For type 2 diabetes: adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus where additional glycaemic control is needed
Both of these are criteria for private prescription. NHS prescribing will be set by NICE guidance, which does not yet exist for orforglipron yet and will take additional time to develop.

The Difference Between Approved and Available?
MHRA’s approval means that the medicine is safe, effective and of acceptable quality for consumption according to UK standards. But approval and availability are two separate things.
So, Orforglipron can now be legally prescribed in the UK by registered prescribers. However, physical supply depends on Eli Lilly distributing stock to UK pharmacies. That may take several weeks from the date of approval.
Private Prescribing vs NHS Access
Private prescribing can start immediately as soon as there is supply in the market. No additional approvals are needed for private providers.
NHS prescribing, however, is a different matter. For a medicine to be routinely funded on the NHS, NICE conducts a technology appraisal to assess its clinical and cost-effectiveness. This process typically takes 12 to 18 months from the date of approval. This is why late 2027 is our best guess for NHS access.
The rollout is expected in a similar pattern to Wegovy and Mounjaro, with restricted access to specialist NHS weight management services with long waiting lists in most areas.

What Is Orforglipron (Foundayo) and How Does It Work?
Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist just like Wegovy and Mounjaro. It is a once-daily pill that works by mimicking GLP-1, a gut hormone that signals your brain when you are full, slows how quickly your stomach empties, and helps regulate blood sugar. Wegovy and Mounjaro also work on the same mechanism, just that this is an oral version as compared to the injectables.
The Wegovy pill is another oral option that works on the same mechanism. But, what makes orforglipron unique is its chemistry. Unlike oral semaglutide (the Wegovy pill), which is a peptide that requires strict fasting conditions to be absorbed, orforglipron is a small non-peptide molecule. It can survive the stomach acid on its own and absorbs reliably regardless of food or timing. This means that it can be taken at any time of day with any amount of water. No empty stomach. No 30-minute wait. Just a daily tablet.

What Do the Clinical Trials Show?
The MHRA approval is based on the ATTAIN Phase 3 trial programme by ELi Lilly, the maker of the drug. Here are its results -
- ATTAIN-1 (no type 2 diabetes): average weight loss of 12.4% of body weight at 72 weeks at the highest 36mg dose. Nearly 60% of participants lost at least 10% of their body weight.
- ATTAIN-2 (type 2 diabetes): average weight loss of 10.5% at the 36mg dose, with HbA1c reduced by an average of 1.8 percentage points.
- ACHIEVE-3: a study comparing Orforglipron with oral semaglutide in type 2 diabetes patients, published February 2026. Orforglipron produced greater weight loss than oral semaglutide in this population.
For comparison, the Wegovy pill produced 13.6% average weight loss at 64 weeks (OASIS 4). Orforglipron's 12.4% at 72 weeks is slightly lower, though comparisons across different trials with different populations come with important caveats.
The key thing, however, to note here is the your results depend very much on your adherence, on how religiously you follow the dosage. With orforglipron’s no restriction benefit, there is a very high chance of you sticking to your schedule, and hence a higher chance of you achieving your weight loss goals.
Orforglipron's Side Effects
Orforglipron's safety profile is similar to that of other GLP-1 medicines. The most commonly reported side effects are nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain. These are most common during the dose escalation period and they typically ease as your body adjusts.
Foundayo vs the Wegovy Pill and Other Current Options
Now that Orforglipron (Foundayo) is MHRA-licensed, you have two licensed oral GLP-1 options alongside the two licensed injectable options. Here’s a basic comparison:
- Orforglipron (Foundayo): once daily, any time, any food, any water. 12.4% average weight loss at 72 weeks (ATTAIN-1, 36mg).
- Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide): once daily, morning only, empty stomach, 120ml plain still water, 30-minute fast. 13.6% average weight loss at 64 weeks (OASIS 4).
- Wegovy injection (semaglutide): once weekly injection, no food restrictions. Up to 20.7% average weight loss at the 7.2mg dose.
- Mounjaro (tirzepatide): once weekly injection, no food restrictions. 22.5% average weight loss at 72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1, 15mg).
If you’re looking for convenience and are happy with modest weight loss, Orforglipron may be the best choice for you. If maximum average weight loss is your primary goal, the injectable options, particularly Mounjaro, have a significant advantage.
There is no one-size-fits-all here. It all depends on your metabolic picture, lifestyle and goals.
What Will Orforglipron Cost in the UK?
Eli Lilly has not confirmed any UK price for the drug. Anything that you currently see on the internet is purely speculation.
Foundayo launched at a list price of between $149-$349 per month for a 30-day supply in the US. With insurance, most patients in the US pay towards the lower number, but the list price helps us understand Eli Lilly’s pricing policy in the private-pay market.
Starting at the cheaper price point, $149 at the current exchange rate gives us £110 per month. However, US and UK private market pricing can differ substantially due to different commercial environments, negotiations, and the competitive landscape at the point of UK launch.
